Sport with a capital S – amateur sport at its passionate best, freed from the drive towards material success, still capable of astonishing the public with feats of extraordinary sporting prowess.

 

 

This is the idea behind Meroni's decision to sponsor two different sporting events in the summer of 2007. The first is a spectacular international enterprise: a cycle marathon from Como to Beijing along the famous Silk Road. No less than 15,000 kilometres, covered by a mixed group of amateur cyclists, taking around a hundred days to cross ten different countries. This epic voyage was brought to Italian audiences by the top sports programme Overland on the Italian national TV RAI 1 which covered the extraordinary event in eight episodes this summer.

 

 

The other event is smaller in scope but no less engaging, if only for the age of the participants. It was the seventh edition of the international soccer tournament held in the city of Bresso in memory of Stefano Lesma. Taking place during the month of May, it brought together beginners and junior teams from four different countries.
